Even though Giresun University is regarded as a new university, some units within the university date back to old times. Some units, which form Giresun University today, were linked to Ministry of Education, Karadeniz Technical University and Cumhuriyet University in the past. We should consider these details when looking the history of Giresun University. The units which create Giresun University are presented in the following pharagraphs within the historical flow.

A unit, which started education with the name of Teacher's Training School for Girls in 1962 constitutes the basis of our university. Giresun Teacher's Training School for Girls was transformed to Training Institute in 1976, and was linked to Karadeniz Technical University as two-years Training High School in 1982.  In 1992 became the Faculty of Education within the same university.

Vocational High School, which was opened within Ministry of Education in 1976 and was linked to the Rectorate of KTU in 1982, Health High School, which started education at associate degree in 1992 and was linked to Karadeniz Technical University at the undergraduate level in 1996,  Tirebolu Vocational High School, which come into service in 1994-95 academic year within the Rectorate of KTU, the Faculty of Science and Letters, which was founded within the  Rectorate of KTU in 1998, Şebinkarahisar Vocational High School, which started educational activities within the Rectorate of Cumhuriyet University in 1998, Faculty of Economics and  Administrative Sciences which was founded in March 2003, Alucra Vocational High School which started educational activities within the Rectorate of Cumhuriyet University in 2005 constituted Giresun University which was founded in 2006 with the law no. 5467 and Council of Ministers Decision.

Within Giresun University, on 27th May 2007 Faculty of Medicine, with the Decision of the Council of Ministers dated August 14, 2008 Görele Faculty of Fine Arts, with the Decision of the Council of Ministers dated August 14, 2008 Tirebolu Faculty of Communication, with the Decision of the  General Council of Higher Education dated July 22, 2008 State Conservatory, with the Decision of the Council of Ministers dated August 14, 2008 Görele School of Applied Sciences, with the Decision of the Council of Ministers dated October 15, 2008 Bulancak School of Applied Sciences, with the Decision of the Council of Ministers dated October 15, 2008 Şebinkarahisar School of Applied Sciences, with the Decision of the  General Council of Higher Education dated November 15, 2007 Eynesil Vocational High School, with the Decision of the  General Council of Higher Education dated February 14, 2008 Espiye Vocational High School, with the Decision of the  General Council of Higher Education dated April 16, 2008 Keşap Vocational High School were founded.

By adding two new departments, Health High School was transformed to Faculty of Health Sciences with the Decision of the Council of Ministers dated October 15, 2008.

As centres within Rectorate, in 2007 Black Sea Centre for Strategic Research and Application (BLACKCSR) , Giresun University Continuing Education Research and Application Center (GÜSEM), within Faculty of Medicine Medical Research and Application Center (GÜSAM) and in 2009 Hazelnut Research and Application Center (GİFAM) were founded.

As departments within Rectorate, Department of the Principles of Atatürk and Turkish Revolution History, Department of Turkish Language, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Fine Arts, Department of Physical Education and Department of Informatics were established with the decision of the  General Council of Higher Education dated April 13, 2007.
