The 1st Workshop, organized within the scope of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan (İRAP) 2027-2031 Period prepared by the Giresun Provincial Directorate of AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority) to increase Giresun's resilience against disasters and reduce disaster risks, was held in Giresun on 15-16 October 2026. In the workshop, conducted under the moderation of Giresun University academics, action proposals for reducing the province's disaster risks were comprehensively evaluated.

The opening program of the workshop began with opening speeches by our Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Şahin, Giresun Deputy Governor Mehmet Fatih Yakınoğlu, and Giresun AFAD Provincial Director Ahmet Tuğhan Sakarya. Throughout the two-day workshop, attended by representatives of public institutions and organizations, local governments, the university, and related stakeholders, Giresun's disaster risks were addressed under four main headings: earthquakes, floods, mass movements, and other disasters.

In the sessions moderated by Giresun University academics, assessments were made regarding the province's current and future disaster risks, while action proposals for reducing disaster risks were discussed in detail in line with the risks and needs identified at the previous workshop. Within the program, views were also exchanged on updating existing actions, carrying ongoing work forward into the new plan period, and creating new actions for the identified needs.

With the valuable contributions of the participating institutions and organizations, important assessments were made toward strengthening Giresun's disaster preparedness capacity and planning risk reduction efforts with a sustainable approach. Giresun University took an active role in developing inter-institutional cooperation by contributing academic knowledge and expertise to efforts aimed at reducing disaster risks.

The İRAP 2027-2031 Period aims to minimize risks before disasters occur, increase the province's disaster preparedness capacity, and effectively implement risk reduction efforts.
